Sun 9 Apr 2017: “La Famille Bélier” - ChOC film of the month

This event is in the past.

Cert 12 / 1hr 43mins

In the Bélier family, sixteen-year-old Paula is an indispensable interpreter for her deaf parents and brother on a daily basis, especially in the running of the family farm. At school, a music teacher discovers her gift for singing and encourages Paula to participate in a prestigious singing contest in Paris, which will secure her a place at a renowned music school. However, this decision would mean leaving her family and taking her first steps towards adulthood. (Shown with subtitles)

'This cheery French comedy-drama works on many levels: as a rites-of-passage story, a rustic family tale, a movie about deafness, a film about singing and a study in small-town politics.' - Geoffrey McNab/The Independent
