Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, in his Oscar winning role as Rudolf Abel, star in this Coen Brothers scripted film based on real events. During the Cold War, U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers was captured by the Soviets after the shooting down of his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers' only hope was New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by the CIA to negotiate his release in a prisoner exchange deal.
