This illustrated talk will trace the history of Salter's Steamers (the Oxford boat firm, founded in 1858) from its roots in Wandsworth to its present-day activities. The business played a major role in the popularisation of leisure on the upper Thames and was also connected with many famous figures, from Lewis Carroll and Edward VII to Lawrence of Arabia and C. S. Lewis. The picture shows an old advertisement, featuring a Salter's steamer.
Simon Wenham is a part-time tutor at Oxford University's Continuing Education Department. He used to work for Salter's as a summer job, before serving as the Operations Manager for a number of years.
