Many thousands of agricultural labourers and craftsmen from Oxfordshire migrated to America, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Cape of Good Hope during the 19th century. This talk tells the story of both enforced and voluntary migration. Transportation, the Poor Law and the role of the Agricultural Labourers' Union are explored. The speaker will also describe the shipping disasters of two migrant ships, in 1845 and 1875, when many Oxfordshire families were drowned.
