Thu 30 Oct 2014: Charlbury WI – A talk by author Jane Robinson (open meeting)

This event is in the past.

Charlbury WI are delighted to welcome local author Jane Robinson as their guest speaker, talking about her book A Force To Be Reckoned With: A History Of The Women's Institute. The WI was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Today, over 215,000 women in the UK belong to the movement and membership is growing. While they are renowned for making jam, the Calendar Girls film and the slow-hand clapping of Tony Blair, the WI are also a serious campaigning body, responsible for initiating the Keep Britain Tidy campaign in 1954 and lobbying for the introduction of breast screening in the 1970s among many others.

Having read English Language and Literature at Somerville College, Oxford, Jane Robinson spent ten years in the antiquarian book trade in London before writing her first book, 'Wayward Women'. She then juggled book dealing, cataloging the Thomas Cook archives, writing, having children and research. She now works as a full time writer and lecturer, specialising in social history through women's eyes.

Talk to be held in the Memorial Hall. £3.50 entrance fee (includes tea/coffee and cake). All welcome. Please note, there will be a small amount of WI business at the beginning of the evening. Please email charlburywi@outlook.com with any queries.
