Sun 7 Oct 2018: Tea Concert: Flute and Piano recital

This event is in the past.

.

The first CRAG tea concert of the season!

.

Philippa Davies, flute. Maggie Cole, piano

"Davies is an intrepid, inquiring and a superb flautist. We hang upon her every note: her playing is warm, fluid, various and as richly vocal as could be." (Financial Times)

Since her celebrated performance of Mozart's Concerto in D major at the BBC Proms in 1988, Philippa Davies has established an international reputation as one of the finest flautists currently performing. She gives recitals and broadcasts throughout the world and has performed concertos in the UK, Europe and North and South America

She is a member of the Nash Ensemble and London Winds and plays as regular guest principal flute with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra.

Philippa will be joined by the eminent American-born harpsichordist and pianist Maggie Cole, described in The New York Times as "A graceful, vital musician with an elegant technique and a razor-sharp feeling for phrasing and accent".

The programme will include

JS Bach - Sonata in B minor BWV 1030

Debussy - 'Syrinx' for solo flute

Ravel - 'Les Oiseaux Tristes' for solo piano

Fauré - 'Morceau de Concours'

Poulenc - Sonata for flute and piano

Philippa and Maggie's recording of the Bach Flute Sonatas was released by Avie records in 2006. You can listen to them playing it here: youtu.be/QnNJPNXNm24
