Tue 20 Mar 2018: Modern Prophets - Visions of a better tomorrow

This event is in the past.

The last in a series of talks about people who have changed our word for the better will be given by Professor Tom Buchanan on Tuesday 20 March at 8 pm in St Mary's Parish Church. Doors open 7.30 pm.
In May 1961 Peter Benenson's newspaper article "The Forgotten Prisoners" inspired the formation of Amnesty International - the epitome of the modern human rights NGO. Remarkably, Amnesty took off almost immediately as not only a national but also an international organisation. However, this instant success had deep roots, and grew out of the development of Benenson's ideas about politics, the law and religion over more than a decade. Tom Buchanan will explore the founding and early years of Amnesty in this talk. He has written a number of influential articles on the history of Amnesty, and is currently writing a book on the history of human rights activism in Britain.
Admission free. Donations gratefully accepted to cover expenses and for Christian Aid's emergency appeal for the Rohingya refugees. Everyone is welcome.
Organised by Churches Together in Charlbury.
