Tree management and restoration of flood plains in Cornbury Park

There has been some interest in Cornbury Park's recent tree clearing near the Evenlode by North Lodge and at Southill. The trees in question are predominately poplars, planted as an industrial crop some 50 years ago to supply wood to a match manufacturer. In consultation with Natural England, the trees have been felled, both to restore the flood plains and to make way for a more characteristic plantation of trees. The removal of the poplars will also go some way to preventing the build up of woody debris which has blocked bridges during recent floods. The poplar wood has been sold as bio fuel; to date 100 oak trees have been planted on the banks above the flood plains, and sheep are grazing the area once more.
