Petition to save Charlbury Post Office

A petition has been started to save Charlbury's Post Office from closure and relocation:

The Post Office wants to close the business on Market Street, and for an existing retailer to take it over. The current postmistress would be removed.

In an advertisement on the Post Office website (see here), they say:

"Post Office Ltd is looking for a successful retailer to incorporate a Post Office Local into their existing or proposed business. The current premises are not available.

"What we're looking for: A substantial retail offer from which a range of Post Office products can be offered from the retail counter; A suitable space to incorporate the Post Office; A successful, innovative business which is competitive in the local area. The potential Operator may already be a retailer in the same catchment area, or be planning to start up a retail business in the area."

In reality, it is believed that only two existing shops in Charlbury are likely to be able to apply - the Co-op and the Londis at Five Ways.

The petition asks:

"We object to the compulsory removal of our Postmistress and to any relocation of the Post Office service within Charlbury. Charlbury's PO is in the town centre and is a keystone of our local shops providing a range of important services, such as banking, available nowhere else in town."
