Charlbury becomes Oxfordshire's first walking town

Charlbury has been awarded Walkers Are Welcome accreditation - the first town in Oxfordshire and the Eastern Cotswolds to do so.

Walkers are Welcome is a nationwide initiative, launched in 2007, to encourage towns and villages to be 'welcoming to walkers'. The 100 WaW towns include places such as Abergavenny, Hay on Wye, Hebden Bridge, Church Stretton, Stroud and Chesham.

By attracting more walkers to the town, Charlbury's WaW group hopes to make it a busier, more successful place. Walkers will bring custom to the pubs and cafés, so they sell more and can open for longer hours. Walkers need B&Bs and other accommodation - an ideal part-time business opportunity for Charlbury people. Walkers will help to fill off-peak trains, making the case for an hourly service through the day.

Future activities will include a launch event with guided walks, pencilled in for the end of August; waymarking recommended routes around the local area; and increased publicity on the web and in print.
