Fri 7 Apr 2017: Charlbury Society: William Smith, the father of English geology

This event is in the past.

Geoffrey Walton will speak on the story and achievements of William Smith who was born in Churchill in 1769. Through his work in canal building, Smith realised that strata of rocks ran across the country in layers and gradually put together the first geological map of England. The importance of his work was only recognised late in his life, and he has become known as the father of English geology. The talk will deal with his life and concentrate on his work on drainage and irrigation, and also cover his work in Oxfordshire.

8pm Memorial Hall, tea and coffee served from 7.30pm
All welcome. Members free, non-members £3
