Beethoven, emotion and tender insight

An outstanding ensemble cast lends weight and depth to an insightful and emotionally satisfying film.

When the beloved cellist of a world-renowned string quartet receives a life-changing diagnosis, the group's future suddenly hangs in the balance: suppressed emotions, competing egos and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and collaboration.

As they are about to play their 25th anniversary concert, quite possibly their last, only their intimate bond and the power of music can preserve their legacy. Inspired by and structured around Beethoven's Opus 131 String Quartet.

"A heartfelt, intelligent, unassumingly well-constructed picture about a musician who has been diagnosed in the early stages of Parkinson's. … A movie with clarity and grownup complexity." (The Guardian)

"A Late Quartet is aimed at a mature audience of the kind who flocked to see The King's Speech, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Quartet. The film offers first-rate, mostly middle-aged actors in an intelligent screenplay that is decently crafted, covers interesting but unfamiliar ground and has a worthwhile central idea. It dares us to care whether a string quartet stays together or not after 25 years." (Daily Mail)

What ChOC members say:

"Sensitive, insightful and clever, very much a Charlbury film. The Hook Norton audience loved it and applauded. Beautiful music, great acting. A well crafted film with a clever construct to examine the dependency and intensity of long friendships disturbed by youth and desire. Good to look at too."

Directed by Yaron Zilberman

Cast includes Christopher Walken, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Imogen Poots, Wallace Shawn.

Doors and licensed bar 6.45, film 7.30. Admission £5 on the door
