There are now six cups and some significant prize money to be won. The Brackenbury Cup is in honour of Vic Brackenbury who once famously won every cup in the Annual Flower and Produce Show. The West Cup is for a small collection of 3 different vegetables (3 of each).

Apart from roses and sweet peas there are classes for other flowers and vegetables, as well as classes for children to enter.

Tips from past judges, which may help in the presentation of exhibits:

SWEET PEAS
In a vase of sweet peas the flowers should be displayed in a fan shape with, if possible, leaves at the back and front to show off the flowers. The spikes should be strong with well-spaced blooms, the top blooms being well expanded and the bottom blooms still good. The flowers should be large with erect standards and rigid wings, free from colour running, spotting or scorching and of a bright colour with a silken sheen. Stems should be long and straight, proportionate to size of blooms.

ROSES
The main criteria used by the judges are freshness and particular attention to the centre of the rose which should form the centre of a spiral and not be split.

Where possible varieties should be named. Floribunda (multi headed) roses should have the centre bud taken out at an early stage to encourage uniformity. Hybrid Teas (large flowered) or single flowered roses should have side buds removed to encourage large blooms. In Class 5 (3 Roses - Bud, Half and Full) the bud should be left until it has developed colour and should not be picked green.
