12.25 CBY to LPD: possibly the most jam-packed Turbo I have ever had the misfortune to travel on. Crammed to bursting with returning Christmas holidaymakers, all with vast amounts of luggage. Some of the vestibules were almost completely blocked with trolley cases, making it virtually impossible to get on or off the train, and presumably contravening health and safety legislation into the bargain. A very uncomfortable journey between Charlbury and Oxford (and not much better further down the line). Lots of occasional travellers who will probably never use the train again. As there were big football and rugby matches taking place as well, why was an HST not deployed for this extremely busy service?

This is actually a response to Caroline's post below about Wednesday 19th August - posted here for completeness....

There were communication problems between FGW's Ops room and the station, meaning that while Ops first cancelled and then reinstated the train as a path was unavailable and then found, the staff at the station were not receiving this information on a timely basis. Hence the confusion that ensued between what the CIS was saying and the announcements being made.

The station staff were also being distracted from this train by dealing with passengers already displaced from a cancelled Bicester Town service earlier.

Utter chaos at Oxford where there was a connection to the Moreton train because of the alternative timetable. Due to leave from platform 3, passengers waited for the train to arrive to continue their journey. After 10-15 mins a train pulled in. No announcement to the contrary so people got on it. A few minutes later the train despatcher told everyone to get off: 'not this train, not this train'. A second, two-carriage turbo then arrived and parked in front of the first train. Passengers got on that one: 'not this train, not this train' said the depatcher (no tannoy announcements were happening). Everyone got off again, and watched as the two trains coupled together. Some minutes later the train pulled out of platform 3 empty and stopped a few hundred yards up the train in a siding. Another few minutes passed and it drew back onto platform 3. Everyone got on. After some minutes sitting, the driver announced this was the train for Banbury. Getting off, the display boards no longer showed the Moreton in Marsh train. Still no tannoy announcement was forthcoming. I went to the station concourse to complain, along with some other people. While I was doing this, other passengers were directed to platform 2 over the footbridge. Having made requests for the correct information to be given over a tannoy to a stroppy customer service person who said that he knew what was happening and had been telling everyone(not true), that an order for taxis had been countermanded by central control, that the station manager had left at 7.30 and that there was no-one in charge, we noticed all the passengers trooping over the footbridge back to platform 3. Finally a tannoy announcement stated that the train had not been cancelled and that it was for Moreton after all. It pulled away around 30 minutes late. The guard "could only apologise for the utter shambles". Too right!

Of more note was that this service and the return train from Worcester were the last First Great Western services ever to be operated by an Adelante, as the three remaining sets are off to a new life, probably running between London Kings Cross and Yorkshire.

The conductor announced that from Monday this service will be operated by an HST.

The 19.39 from Worcester Shrub Hill to Hanborough ran to time throughout. However, there was no heating AT ALL in any part of this Turbo service and no apologies or explanations were received from the Train Manager. I think this is utterly appalling - it was very cold last night and the temperature must have been sub-zero for at least some of the journey because patches of ice had already formed at Charlbury station when I left the train. Despite wearing gloves and a thick coat I still felt very cold during the hour I was on this train and will be making an official complaint as a result. This service was an absolute disgrace - I wouldn't treat a rat the way FGW treat some of their passengers. This is the third time in a week that I've been on a Turbo on the Cotswold Line in which the heating has been off. This refrigerated transit system must be abolished before someone dies of hypothermia!

10.21 CBY to LPD ran (which is an achievement in itself given the chequered history of this train's predecessor the 10.10) but it was an unheated Turbo on what was an extremely cold morning. Endless faffing about at Oxford as the train repeatedly jerked forward about a metre or two and then backward about the same distance (seemingly some problem with coupling two Turbos together). Train left Oxford late but caught up some time on the way to Didcot where I got off and transferred to a lovely toasty HST on its way to London from Cardiff. The 10.21 was running about 8 mins late when I parted company with it. No explanations or apologies whatsoever for either the glacial nature of the accommodation or the late running.

Not a good day for south of England rail services in general - the usually reliable Chiltern Railways were all over the place when I departed High Wycombe in the evening and later on at Reading, South West Trains were busily cancelling services and announcing delays of up to 50 mins due to a broken-down train near Twickenham. Widespread misery therefore for a substantial number of people attempting to travel home after the holidays.

Im a guard for great western and id like to respond to ALEX F about the comment he made about closing doors.I dont wish to be nasty or cause trouble.Our job IS to check that all the doors on the train are closed,but we arent there to close each and every door after every passenger.It does help us greatly when people close the doors properly because the trains can depart reasonably on time.FGW are concerned about trains being on time but nothing in this life runs smothly.Everything goes wrong now and again.You wouldnt get out of a taxi and leave the door open and expect the driver to shut it for you.I understand that comments on here say about trains being late or on time but its out of order when people get personal about the on board train staff,of which i am one.We are not lazy and we do alot of work for our pay.I wouldnt dream of questioning your retail ability and the amount you get paid.Im glad that mr Smyth agrees with us guards.Because if (god forbid) anything did happen to your train then you would appriciate a kind member of staff to help you out.

Alex, ask yourself this, is it really that much of a deal to close a door? Why don't you claim compensation from FGW, for the amount of seconds in a lifetime lost to 'closing doors'?

Anyway, a few words of advice. When closing a door, to avoid another passenger's fingers....KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!!
Without these 'lazy guards', where would you be - god forbid - when your train is involved in an accident?

In fact that's where you're wrong - I do close the door behind me actually. But it would only take one small lapse of concentration to slam a child's fingers in the door. Could someone please explain why the certain train guards seem to think we, the customer should do parts of their jobs for them - for example closing the doors behind us as we leave the train. Where would we, the public stand if we for example shut the door on another customers fingers?

What do these types of lazy guards do for their pay other than bore commuters with the same old announcements day in, day out?

I have been on trains in the last year or so where the guard has described a service running 15 mins late as "The slightly delayed..."! I suppose to those who are used to habitual delays then 15 mins is neither here nor there. To an occasional rail user trying to make a tight connection it can be very important and the difference between a pleasant journey and a bloody nightmare. The problem is that late running is deeply engrained within the railway culture.

After this morning's fiasco when the train over-ran the station - think the driver must have been in a day dream as it went flying through - FGW seem, as Mike says, to be going back to their bad old ways. The 10% discount comes to an end soon - pressure I think for it to continue is needed.

Although I was not travelling, I did see a report on the FGW web site that this train was diverted via Swindon and Stroud after calling additionally at Didcot Parkway. The reason given was lack of a member of train crew. Presumably this means that either the Train Manager or the Driver who actually took the train had not "signed the route" between Oxford and Worcester.

Train left, only slightly late, from Platform 14 which is an extremely long walk from the main indicator boards at Paddington. But the platform number was displayed only 5 minutes before the train was due to depart. And this is just not long enough for people who are disabled or who have lots of luggage. The extremely wet & slippery platform made it dangerous to run.

This was probably in part due to the floods & signalling problems that delayed in-bound Paddington trains during the afternoon & evening. (The 13.40 reached Paddington with around 30 mins delay.) But it was only a more extreme example of the general lack consideration for the ederly & infirm as regards to platform display on this line. The display is almost always last minute, & generally goes up later than all the other routes.

Of course he has to pass all the passengers trying to get to the front. Lost 5 min at Hanborough due to this comedy of errors.

I appreciate that William - maybe I should have said "The railways are reverting to their worst form of last year". However, when you've waited outside for a long time on a very cold day, when there are three mutually conflicting sources of information at the station (four if you count the ticket clerk) and all give the wrong arrival time for the train, when an audio announcement is made saying that the train will arrive in 1 minute and yet it takes another 10 and you eventually arrve in Oxford over half an hour late, messing up your plans for the afternoon, then you don't care much who is to blame! The improvements made earlier in the year do not seem to have been sustained this autumn in my opinion.

Arrived at Oxford on time, where it promptly terminated owing to "A fatality on the line in the Maidenhead area" (the first those of us on the train had heard of it). Had to wait half an hour at Oxford for the next fast train which then proceeded anything but fast all the way between Reading and Slough on the relief lines (fast lines still closed in aftermath of fatality). Arrived at Paddington 1 hour 2 mins late.

This is the second time I've been to London this month and on both occasions the train has been terminated at Oxford, with considerable delays as a result. I accept that a suicide on the line (if such it was) is outside of FGW's control but there have been worrying signs in the last few weeks that a regression to the bad old days of last winter is just around the corner.

The sign at The North Pole states London to Paris in 2 hours 15 minutes. Only 45 minutes longer than London to Charlbury.... Oh for those days of departing at 07:38 and arriving regularly at 08:40.

Service was late in so departure delayed to around 1803. Good progress to Oxford and no irritating delay there but we then faffed around Wolvercote, stopping and starting repeatedly and got to Charlbury at 1930

No announcement on the train but I think the root cause of the problems must have been a signalling fault between Wolvercote and Ascott-under-Wychwood. At Wolvercote, after stopping at the signal just on to the single line, the driver got out and called the signal box, before setting off past a red light and there were technicians looking at lineside equipment cabinets either side of Charlbury station and Network Rail vans parked at Ascott.

The first train to London (1010) was to be replaced by a 1043 train which would terminate at Hanborough, with a bus to Oxford. There was no visible notice about this at the station. This train was shown as cancelled at about 10am. Rail enquiries said there would be a substitute bus to take us to Hanborough, where we could switch buses.... As there was no sign of this bus at 1043 I gave up and shared a taxi.

Arriving at Paddington. Ticket machine wouldn't sell me a Network Cardholders ticket as it has been incorrectly programmed. Bought a ticket from the chappie sitting at the table just inside the office - this failed to work in any of the ticket gates I used during the day in London, causing considerable annoyance and inconvenience. Train was supposed to have been an HST but was actually an Adelante, thus full and standing all the way to Paddington as the 08.33 had been cancelled/diverted. Air-con not working in parts of the train.

I do hope that FGW are not gearing themselves up for a fullscale spirit-sapping summer meltdown, undoing all the good work of the last few months. Ahead of us we still have the high-summer days of buckled rails and failed air-conditioning. Oh how I look forward to them...

Then watched 1 FGW employee (presumably the most junior based at Oxford and without any experience of similar situation) attempt to organise onward taxis. Almost felt sorry for him until he advised Worcester-bound passengers they would be quicker to wait for next train (2252 at Oxford) than take cab. Eventually at Charlbury at 2250. We were brought back by an Oxford minicab driver (one of many who turned up at Oxford station) who maintained he didn't need a FGW chit as their firm had an account with the station. Simply needed a signature on arrival at Charlbury. FGW man at Oxford didn't want to listen to the mincab drivers but it might be worth remembering for future use.

Where do I start.

The train was a turbo that ran us up to Oxford (this arrived on time into Charlbury). Over running engineering works meant that we had to get of at Oxford.

A coach was then provided and sat 57 people - we thought we were the lucky ones.

The coach broke down just after turning onto the A34 slip road at the Botley Interchange with water pouring out of the back of the coach.

We were then told to make our own way back to Oxford Station, perhaps catch a bus if there was one.

The load of us trudged back along the slip road and grass verge. (Writing this makes me think of an Ealing Comedy but somehow I am not smiling). I then managed to get into a taxi at Oxford station after catching a bus to the station. This dropped us off at Didcot Parkway.

Rinally got into Paddington at 8.42 so not a happy bunny.

The 0833 from Charlbury was diverted via Cheltenham and Swindon due to a broken down freight train at Hereford this morning.

The 0938 from Charlbury was held at Ascott due to reports of an obstruction on the line near Hanborough - it couldn't enter the single line until the line was checked. This in turn slightly delayed the 0851 Paddington-Hereford (0956 from Oxford) which was held at Wolvercote.

The 1718 Adelante from Charlbury, delayed by signal problems near Evesham terminated at Oxford and FGW transferred people to the 1830 HST which started from the adjacent platform. The 1738 from Oxford was worked by a Turbo.
